Bellville South

There was a buzzing in their head, like a drone or a mosquito. They flicked it with the back of their hand. But every time they woke up to a new stale morning, it was back again. They were lis for something they couldn’t have. A fat stuk fillet on a Spur hotplate. But it wasn’t on the menu.

Custom intake, nitrous nozzles, six forged aluminium pistons, a gas tank, two brackets. They fitted a steel plate between the carburettor and the intake, a steel pipe to shoot petrol into the nitrous, and solenoids to control the spray. They fitted a control button to the dashboard of the Polo. It took the whole day. But if they had to go, the car was ready. They lowered their laptop lid while they got dressed. Paro. Their phone rang.

‘I found the nurse who tended to that little girl, years ago.’

Their heart raced.

‘She’s near retirement age now, but she says she remembers her clearly. She doesn’t remember seeing a Tamagotchi though – or any other kind of toy. But she’s old, so who knows. Apparently, Kaylin got to the hospital already critically injured. You might have a better chance asking the paramedic?’

It wasn’t a helpful response. But they were almost in tears at the effort alone. There were emojis in the news headlines. They touched the real printed newspaper again. Still eerie. They liked it. They checked their Instagram DMs. No response yet from the girl they adored. They kicked the bullet still on the lounge floor, net liggies.
